It looks as if someone has woken up! There is increased alarm among pundits and politicians at Italy's declining birth rate. Add to that a record level of emigration by Italians of all ages for "anywhere else but here" and of course the finance ministry must be especially concerned that taxable people are disappearing.

No one appears to be addressing the obvious questions that every single citizen here could well answer. Why are people reluctant to have children and why are people leaving?
Well we could start with the overwhelming taxation system: its the highest in Europe. As if this is not bad enough the government with its EU affiliated unelected law makers actively discourages entrepreneurial initiative. To set up a small business or even to sell as you go to be self sufficient requires you to comply with thousands of laws and regulations that shut you down swiftly,
Add to that a pathetic and expensive level of services across all sectors as compared with many Asian countries that today are more advanced and less bureaucratic, (such as banking, legal services, postal services, transactions etc). It is also obvious that many local PROFESSIONALS don't accept that there are other ASIAN COUNTRIES that are ahead and WAY BETTER at providing services with more PROFESSIONALISM AND COURTESY,
An emblematic example is the sale of Alitalia airline: its been failing for at least 20 years with on and off buyers and bailouts but the bottom line is that Italy cannot make it work. Whereas the standards of the pilots are excellent there are many operations and service issues that are lagging and that no one has thus far been able to fix,

The level of customer client awareness is stunningly low and when you add all these minuses together you can get a feel for why ordinary people might just think twice about bringing children into this world especially in this country....and why so many Italians leave. There appears to be no future or an even more complicated one ahead. Hence the Nigel/Trump like hope in Salvini.

Oh and this bureaucratic repressive system also encourages a great deal of dishonesty which manifests in many people being deceived and cheated at every turn. And we are also talking about professional services as well. One lawyer has for example (documented case) provided a quote, accepted the case and on completion and without any prior notice charged double what was agreed. As always there are many theoretical safeguards and protections (on paper) that do not really work. All the so called constitutional safeguards are there to protect those with means.. It means you need money and time to vindicate your rights.

To be sure there are still professional and honest people to be found with high principles and morals in this beautiful country.
But living here even only a few months, as an Italian, I am thankful that my children live in Asia.
For all its faults and imperfections, its still worth living away from this self destructive environment in which most people today appear to look out only for themselves.
