"He who is silent and bows his head
dies every time he does so.
He who speaks aloud and walks
with his head held high dies only once."
Giovanni Falcone
Giovanni Falcone; 18 May 1939 – 23 May 1992 was a top Italian prosecutor who spent most of his professional life trying to overthrow the power of the Sicilian Mafia that had become a state unto itself and had links to what we would today call a deep state. He and his police escort, were killed by the mafia in an extraordinarily coordinated military/saboteur styled bombing (est 1000 kgs TNT not exactly available at the local ironmonger) in Sicily in May 1992 (Capaci) with the implicit contribution and certain betrayal by members of the Italian political/state apparatus or fraternity who have never directly been held accountable. Another heroic judge and colleague Paolo Borsellino was to follow several months after. (countless other good policemen/women, judges, journalists, honest people paid this huge price).
Italy (like Colombia, Mexico and other gang/drug infested countries) has seen many martyrs in the course of attempting to administer justice that have included incorruptible honorable men and women from all professions that were abandoned by a weak cowardly, corrupt and complicit political structure. Their only fault: a scrupulous integrity and commitment to the rule of law and the oaths they took. All wiped out systematically by truly dark interconnected forces. To date every government has been either unable or unwilling to extinguish these cancers despite enormous funds and military /technological hardware.
Always in our memories. always grateful!
